The Great Divide

the grand canyon

expands and falls

a huge divide

where we tumble

as you stumble

politely towards me

words slurring to be

the alcohol speaking freely

and yet saying nothing

this schism follows us

relentlessly

a nomadic crater

seeking to finally

bury

whatever

whomever

might politely

decide

she he cannot abide

this living

and forgiving

I desperately want to leave

the entire place

I study without ceasing

the art of ever quiescing

so perhaps you might not glean

my absence or yours

although I cannot see the pit

and I know not a whit

of how to get away

I continually pray

for courage to escape

the strangulation of agape

addiction ever drowns me

even as twelve steps surround me

please please confound me

and fly me away
